I killed Rudoph, I got your kid’s loots for Christmas, and I’m plundering Davy Jone’s ship! How fucking random can you get?!
Aside from a splash page of Reimu cloudriding on a boat, ZUN’s latest game seems to be something that has the good ol’ danmaku elements back. For the last few games, I’ve been having qualms about the rules and systems used in the past Touhou games, specifically Mountain of Faith and Subterranean Animism. Of course, you guys should know the gist of it because I didn’t post anything from said games. Now, it’s getting oldschool, and interesting again at that.
The game in question is Touhou Seirensen/東方星蓮船 ~ Undefined Fantastic Object, which has a demo to be released March 8 on Reitasai, and full version’s going to be out on NatsuComi/Summer Comiket on August 14-16. But wait, UFO, with a japanized meaning for the abbreviation? WHAT.THE.FRIKKIN.HELL. I mean, okay, story states of this floating “treasure ship”, and everyone’s chasing it. But what the hell, there’s gotta be a better title than that! Of course I know the EENGREESH, but the title’s still so arguable.
Reminds me of PCB Phantasm Stage.
Playable characters shown on the post are Reimu Hakurei, Sanae Kochiya, and Marisa Kirisame. Some speculate other characters from the previous series, but so far, the screenies show only these three. Well, that’s to be expected! Reimu’s pretty much obvious on this one because aside from her being the main character (STILL), the temptation of riches up for games is just too much to handle. Marisa may be interested to what magic items the ship holds, and Sanae may either be facing the same problem as Reimu’s in regards to finance, or maybe there’s something else. Reimu and Marisa seem to stick to the old variations (ReimuA and MarisaA) and may have more, but Sanae’s the one that got me confused. If it’s Sanae, it could’ve been something along the lines of stars, hexagrams (yes, everyone! get your shapes right!), and ofudas, but no, it wasn’t. It looked like SanaeA had rainbow ofudas for main guns and flying frog charms for sub bullets. I don’t get it. I really don’t. Hopefully, SanaeB is the one we’re all looking for.
Finally, some good ZUNart.
ZUN may have also improved on his drawings for this game. Just take a look at that Reimu. I don’t know if the resolution’s picking on my eyes, or it’s true that he’s gotten good. Too bad there weren’t anything else shown about character illustrations. Seems that Reimu’s still on the spotlight for the mainstays. Marisa can’t steal that precious thing so far.
Lastly, the interface! There’s still the usual bomb-that-nerfs-your-power system from the last two games, but the fact that they’re using the spellcards again made me rejoice that I didn’t mind the power nerfs altogether. It’s all going to be in good use. There’s the UFO slots that replaced the Signal interface on the lower left of the screen, and there are two gauges noted by stars, which I don’t know the purpose. Maybe the amount of treasure mugged? Davy Jones would be furious! DEM TOWHOOS TURNINGS PAIREETS? WII BEE JUMMIN’!
The original post is in here. Now, back to waiting for this shit, like the rest of us.

OMGOMGOMGOMG!!! Davy Jones!!! Man, I lol’d so hard that I almost got my pants wet xDXDXDXD
Anyways. I’m glad that we’re going back a bit to the ‘ol good days. Spellcards and whatnot. Yay. Can’t wait for this shit to happen.
“If it’s Sanae, it could’ve been something along the lines of stars, hexagrams (yes, everyone! get your shapes right!), and ofudas, but no, it wasn’t.”
I believe you are mistaken about hexagrams. Sanae uses five-pointed stars also known as pentagrams.
Oh yeah, I forgot about that. She does use hexagram patterns on some of her spellcards, though.
U.F.O. yeah.. I think ZUN would be more creative than that..
Most of us don’t think so. He’s gotta have a more better name than that.
