Kara no Kyokai - Garden of Sinners Movie 2: Murder Speculation (First Half)

LULZ FOR NEKO ARC CAMEO!

Kara no Kyokai never failed to disappoint me with the second movie, in a psychological sense. But then again, the way Nasu explains these things through the characters tend to bend the normal sense of one’s own thinking. I dunno, it just couldn’t connect yet the entire message is there for you to read. That being said, it’s like a double-edged sword that can either entice or confuse the audience.

Basically, I loved Nasu’s works. Screw the hentai. Screw the fights. My point view on those are irrelevant even though I can say the fight scenes are well-deployed (though you can’t see any this time around). It only revolves on the way the characters find out and then integrate on various inconsistencies and abnormalities they would want to percieve on a certain matter, which may or may not ultimately relate amongst themselves. That alone is enough to make a story interesting.

Fuck, I’m beginning to think this is about to become a tl;dr po-HURRAY FOR CAT LEN PLUSHIES!

Anyways, we backtrack on the past, and see how Kokuto and Shiki interact with each other. In short, the past. In the past though, it was made clear that Shiki had two personalities, the male SHIKI (who addresses himself as “ore”) and the female Shiki (who addresses herself as “watashi”). The point is to explain mostly of Shiki’s past, how she became what she is now, and what became of Kokuto and her when she still had the male personality.

Of course, we all know the stern, cold facade of Shiki, and the rebellious, carefree attitude of SHIKI, even though they’re doing the opposite of what their mouths say. SHIKI defies everything to the point of inversion impulse (the usual coined term for such personality changes, Nasu-wise), while Shiki tries her best to suppress the male one to the point of isolation. In fact, the former is so paranoid about rebelling from the latter that the former was able to manifest repeatedly on the latter’s mind. SHIKI was true to his nature as he tries to fight for the rights of Shiki’s body that she sees him in anything that resembles or manifests him. That’s where the two clash, or rather, combine, into the ultimate killer.

That’s right, SCREAM! SCREAM AND PANT YOUR LUNGS OUT AS A SLIT YOUR FUCKING THROAT IN A FEW MOMENTS!

Of course Kokuto was at the brunt of Shiki’s problems, maybe because of his pretty peculiar intuition or simply because he sticks his nose too much on Shiki’s affairs. Add in a noisy policeman brother, some gruesome killings, and the story deepens. But it all boiled down on the perceptions of Shiki, SHIKI, and Kokuto to one another, and how each try to understand the other, and the other, aside from each one’s self. How would a person who knows murder be able to know one who doesn’t, or one who denies it? How would one cope up with murder when someone he knows does it, even though the murderer said she could, but couldn’t? Interesting to the point of confusion, no?

Don’t sweat it. Wind back your screws, people. Nasu’s too demonoid about death that it’s the norm on every story that relates to the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception. Well, that’s what the eyes are for, right? But to be able to talk about death in such a manner that it looked like a habit seemed to be quite… disturbing. Of course, if you had two personalities, and you see the other personality in a person, would you kill? If of course, you want to preserve yourself in a way where you know you have to eliminate the other to stay sane, YOU’LL DO IT. There are many other ways, but it would be too bothersome, so to end it in the quickest way would be in order. But trying to substitute a random person for the personality in question DOES NOT MAKE SENSE, and so IT WOULD ONLY RESULT IN RANDOM BLOODSHED. But would that matter? No. You’re hell-bent into secluding yourself from people that you might be able to see your other self in every face you see and then kill them. Of course THAT would matter, especially if you have someone whom you know you can’t dispense. What does Kokuto say on the matter, then?

And again, another Nasushroom cameo. DAMMIT, STOP PAYING HOMAGE ON THAT PARANOID NOVELIST. IT DOES NOT EVEN MAKE YOU GROW, OR GIVE YOU 1UPS!

Kokuto is such a mysterious guy for me. He’s got good intuition, his common sense is quite above average with the fact that he knows how things would go even if he knows that it’s way too much for him or his life to handle, and he never fails to care with his “Good Guy” aura. He was the only person who knows every little bit of Shiki’s problem just by observing and interacting with her in such a short time. Even though the pieces or clues left behind were pretty much vague or obscure, or even confusing, Kokuto seems to have been able to grasp a hold of the situation. If I were to ask you if you saw a murder with the murderer as your friend that has split personalities fighting for dear body possession, would you be able to deny? I’ll leave that to you.

Anyways, like I said, Nasu’s just playing with your minds. Think about it too much, and you’ll end up questioning your state of mind. It’ll just confuse you, so just enjoy every bit of it and don’t delve on it too deeply.

Oh, and Nasu seems to hate piracy and stalkers, so don’t do it unless you wanna be like Toko here.

I was disappointed with this movie. I think that these movies can appeal only to Nasu fans who have previous knowledge of the source material. They explained nothing in this movie, the final confrontation between Kokuto and Shiki is left without a resolution. They didn’t explain how Kokuto managed to survive while Shiki is in a coma. This is not good cinema. If I had not read the correponding chapter of the novel I would be very pissed.

@Son Gohan: that’s just the way this is. this is a 2 part chapter and the answers will come in a few movies. Don’t think about it and just enjoy the music and pretty pictures until the answers arrive.

Son Gohan: Well, Nasu’s way of storytelling in general terms (be it novel, VN, or anime) is already confusing enough to the point of retardedness. If you don’t have such a logical way of thinking, not a point will be understood. Basically, it’s not for the faint of heart, not for the weak of mind, and definitely not for someone without a good sense of patience. At this chapter, Nasu is making you see how the situation goes on Kokuto’s point of view, regardless of timeline. And like Choux said, it will come out in the latter chapters, so just keep the current info and piece up the clues from the upcoming movies later on.
