Regret, Normalcy and Choice in Mysterious Girlfriend X – A Certain Tsubaki’s Dilemma

Best. Screenshot. Ever.

The sixth episode of Mysterious Girlfriend X was divided into two segments, and while the first one seems a bit normal and romantic in its own way, the latter part partly tackled one of Tsubaki’s most heart-wrenching moments. I’ll try not to spoil things here since I read the manga, but I’ll try to make it as meaty as possible.

Mysterious Girlfriend X First Impressions: Snippity Snip Snip!

I’ve been waiting for this. A few months ago, I called the possibility of Mysterious Girlfriend X(謎の彼女X/Nazo no Kanojo X) getting an anime adaptation, and I was right. I mean, how could I be wrong? It masquerades as slice-of-life while having a very weird concept for plot progression and character development. This reason alone is enough ground for any animation company to make an adaptation of it.

Carnival Phantasm 1: The Gate of Babylon is Clearly Cheating

This is a colloquium post with Hisui of Reverse Thieves.

Let me get this straight from the start. If anyone knows me they should know I cannot review Carnival Phantasm. We all have our prejudices that taint our perceptions. We can try to minimize them and put them aside in the best way we can. But they’re always there. Any review of a Type-Moon property from me is highly suspect, unless I give it a thumbs down in which case you already know it was so horrible that the gods themselves weep when they look upon such an abomination. So instead of wasting your time with Shance and I pretending to give some sort of fair assessment of Carnival Phantasm, we shall instead try to shed some insight into the little sketches in the show. I will have to warn anyone that while these episodes might be entertaining to someone without an encyclopedic knowledge of the Nasuverse, the anime assumes that you are a well-versed Type-Moon fan, as the show makes no effort to explain anything. So I will mostly be throwing in my two cents on things people might have missed. If we miss anything here feel free to drop some knowledge on us. I myself love to learn more about the Type-Moon Universe.

Intermingling Fantasy and Reality Within Nichijou’s Characters

A visual representation of achieving the higher tenets of unfunny jokes and self-humiliation.

I know a lot of us are wondering why: Out of all of Nichijou’s characters, it’s always Yukko and Nano who get the most attention and air time. Some believe that these two are the show’s main characters. Some hinge on the fact that the duo provides the most comic relief in the show. And some simply dismiss this as something that’s in the show’s nature. But there’s actually something special that sets these two apart from anyone else in Nichijou, something that shows how they deserve the external exposure they get.

More on Nichijou: Remembering the Mistakes of One’s Youth

I am guilty of doing something like the above image suggests. And yes, I did it when I was in middle school.

I know a lot of us watch Nichijou with a reason, ranging from the wit, the laughs, and the stunning quality. But unknown to many of us, there is one more reason why people enjoy the show, one that strikes me the most every time I watch it. What reason is that, you ask? That, is remembering the youthful indiscretions of one’s youth.

Nichijou First Impressions: Random, Cute, Pointless, and Totally Funny

I’ll be frank: I have never watched any slice-of-life shows that involve and/or combine comedy and middle school life. No Azumanga Daioh, no Pani Poni Dash, no Ichigo Mashimaro, and definitely no Lucky Star. So when I saw Nichijou and its description on Scamp’s show chart for Spring, I decided to watch it and see how deep the rabbit hole goes. And boy, was I caught unprepared!

Not Really Secret Santa 2010: Encountering the Supernatural in Bakemonogatari

This post is part of the Reverse ThievesSecret Santa Project. I dearly thank them for letting me participate in this annual event.

I have always loved the supernatural. Those stories of mythical apparitions and malevolent entities will always get my blood pumping in excitement and interest. My love for Touhou and Index is a result of this. And knowing that Bakemonogatari tackles the occult in a much more different light, I eagerly watched every episode with anticipation.
