The sixth episode of Mysterious Girlfriend X was divided into two segments, and while the first one seems a bit normal and romantic in its own way, the latter part partly tackled one of Tsubaki’s most heart-wrenching moments. I’ll try not to spoil things here since I read the manga, but I’ll try to make it as meaty as possible.
I’ve been waiting for this. A few months ago, I called the possibility of Mysterious Girlfriend X(謎の彼女X/Nazo no Kanojo X) getting an anime adaptation, and I was right. I mean, how could I be wrong? It masquerades as slice-of-life while having a very weird concept for plot progression and character development. This reason alone is enough ground for any animation company to make an adaptation of it.

I know a lot of us are wondering why: Out of all of Nichijou’s characters, it’s always Yukko and Nano who get the most attention and air time. Some believe that these two are the show’s main characters. Some hinge on the fact that the duo provides the most comic relief in the show. And some simply dismiss this as something that’s in the show’s nature. But there’s actually something special that sets these two apart from anyone else in Nichijou, something that shows how they deserve the external exposure they get.

But unknown to many of us, there is one more reason why people enjoy the show, one that strikes me the most every time I watch it. What reason is that, you ask? No Azumanga Daioh, no Pani Poni Dash, no Ichigo Mashimaro, and definitely no Lucky Star. So when I saw Nichijou and its description on Scamp’s show chart for Spring, I decided to watch it and see how deep the rabbit hole goes. And boy, was I caught unprepared!

Before I start, let it be known that I’m going to use Strike Witches for our little experimentation on moe. I just hope I can give a more generalized explanation on things, especially if you don’t feel like digging into Strike Witches in order to understand what is going to be discussed. Also, please note that I am not concretely defining moe by enlightening readers on what is simply an aspect of the word in question.

Ask a hardcore Strike Witches fan to choose the character with the most moe in the franchise, and he or she will most likely choose Sanya V. Litvyak, the representative of Orussia for the 501st Joint Flight Squadron. And if they do, we then ask as to why. Why, indeed? What makes Sanya so popular? What makes her rise above the other girls? Why does a girl who doesn’t even want to stand out get all the attention? Is it because of her character design? Her personality? Her weaponry? Her affiliation? Her nationality?
