Upotte!! First Impressions: Full-Auto Trouble

When I saw Upotte!! on this season’s chart, the synopsis alone was enough to make my gun junkie nerves tingle. Of course, as with all shows, the idea of enjoying a show about anthropomorphised guns should be taken with a grain of salt. And with three episodes in, I don’t really think this show bodes well for me, nor did it take just one grain of salt.

Mysterious Girlfriend X First Impressions: Snippity Snip Snip!

I’ve been waiting for this. A few months ago, I called the possibility of Mysterious Girlfriend X(謎の彼女X/Nazo no Kanojo X) getting an anime adaptation, and I was right. I mean, how could I be wrong? It masquerades as slice-of-life while having a very weird concept for plot progression and character development. This reason alone is enough ground for any animation company to make an adaptation of it.

The Obscured Concept of Poster Children in Ikoku Meiro no Croisée

Japan, meet France.

Ikoku Meiro no Croisée is the latest anime series attempting to illustrate the West’s fascination with Japan, and Japan’s fascination with the West, by bringing an adorable Japanese girl named Yune to a shop in 19th century Paris. While it’s true that this series focuses far more on provoking the audience into recognizing Yune’s cuteness above anything else, there is a far more serious undercurrent to the structure of the series…

The above excerpt is but a simple introduction to one of the many ideas Ikoku Meiro no Croisée left on our curiosities. And as one who likes to find meaning on the simplest of notions, I can only nod my head in agreement. However, I found something much more intriguing than the idea of culture clashing, something that could play along as an allegory of it, which is what this post is all about.

Nichijou First Impressions: Random, Cute, Pointless, and Totally Funny

I’ll be frank: I have never watched any slice-of-life shows that involve and/or combine comedy and middle school life. No Azumanga Daioh, no Pani Poni Dash, no Ichigo Mashimaro, and definitely no Lucky Star. So when I saw Nichijou and its description on Scamp’s show chart for Spring, I decided to watch it and see how deep the rabbit hole goes. And boy, was I caught unprepared!

OreImo First Impressions: The Woes of a Closet Otaku

I think Ore no Imōto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai (or simply OreImo), is one of the most interesting shows so far. No, no, I’m not exaggerating here. I’m serious, and you probably wouldn’t know why unless you have played more than ten eroges in your lifetime, or have been an otaku all your life.

B-Cup Sex Maniac (Late) First Impressions: Nothing Is Wrong With This Show

It’s Yaoi Spring Season, and even though a good show is hard to find (I am currently being convinced by a lot of people to watch Angel Beats! and Working!!!), an interesting one came to me in the form of B-Gata H Kei, a.k.a. B-Cup Sex Maniac. While some think that this show is nothing more than a perverted streak of fanservice without any notable plot aside from the main characters’ amorous advances, think again.

It’s an epic battle… in a wrong sort of way, actually…

Hanamaru Yochien First Impressions: GAINAX Y U SLICE MAI LIFE

REIMU KOUME AT 9 O’CLOCK: Digiboy, if there’s someone I can clearly blame on this, that would really have to be you.

Okay, fine. I’m convinced that there’s actually something that’s good for Winter season. I admit defeat, Winter.  You too, GAINAX. You both happy now?

Hanamaru Yochien. A seemingly harmless, slice-of-life-ish show featuring kindergarten life: Kids, caretakers, parents and all. But before you (or in a much more dramatic case, I) can think it’s going to be the same mundane type of show that has a 99.9% probability to mutate into a case of KODOMO NO JIKAN, the show suddenly shows an inner gem in a setting where innocence is so abundant and sustaining, it defeats any sense of precociousness and false instances of maturity.
